Description

An anthology of the raw, unvarnished writings of Vermont’s incarcerated women who as participants in the writinginside VT program find a voice and new understanding of their world and themselves. Research shows that writing and art – indeed, all expressive creative activity – stimulates positive feelings and self-esteem. Exposure to beauty enhances mental heath and wellness. With more than half the women prisoners suffering from mental illness, this is critical work. Due to poverty and limited education, many have never had the opportunity to explore the arts. Creating something with their own hands is stimulating and healing, and provides focus and value. Their writings indicate how hungry they are for affirmation, opportunity and expression. Regular writing helps women grow in self-esteem and confidence, pushing their awareness into new territory.
