Description

A series of essays in which the author reveals her thoughts on the relationship between the Church and the modern world. Introduces readers to fascinating Catholic figures like Saint Angela Merici and the English martyrs Margaret Clitheroe and Robert Southwell – people who stood fast to their faith in the face of intellectual and political hostility.

Undset uses these stories to point out the many tragic inconsistencies, hypocrisies and blind spots of the modern secular mindset and the inaccurate ways in which the Catholic Church is sometimes portrayed, tackling subjects including religious freedom, Christian/Muslim relations and the vocation of women.

Sigrid Undset (1882-1949) a novelist, essayist, Catholic convert and lay Dominican was born in Denmark but lived most of her life in Norway. In 1928 she became the third woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
