Description

0Fides et Ratio, published in 1998, is the encyclical letter of Pope John Paul II concerning the Faith & Reason. Because it discusses issues like faith and culture, the nature of truth , philosophy and seminary education, and the purpose of theology, this encyclical letter has been studied and discussed mainly in specialist journals, rather than in newspapers and pastoral magazines. And yet in many ways it serves as a key to the thought of the present Holy Father, and a clue to his method and procedure in the twelve other encyclicals he has previously issued.

The Challenge of Truth: Reflections on Fides et Ratio is an important new collection, containing twelve essays , by Irish and international contributors , that engage with a document whose intellectual effect will be with the Church for generations to come.

In three parts, The Challenge of Truth begins with five contributors from the field of philosophy and theology, engaging with the central perspectives of the encyclical and endeavouring to explicate its message. The second part of the book consists of four explorations of the intellectual journey made by the young Karol Wojtyla, as a worker, seminarian and a student priest at Lublin and Rome. Finally, the work recommends certain perspectives opened by the letter, regarding European culture, world cultures and religions, and the strengthening of dialogue among people of good will regarding human dignity and development.

Including contributions from Thomas Kelly, Francesca Murphy, Timothy Mooney, Thomas Norris, Patrick Gorevan, Mette Levch, Kevin Doran, Bruno Forte, Brendan Purcell and the editor James McEvoy, and including also a central contribution from Cardinal Cahal Daly, The Challenge of Truth is a must for those with an interest in Catholic Faith and contemporary culture.
